Magazine Project- Genre Research

 On of the most highly successful magazine among the younger demographic is Seventeen Magazine. This publication gravitates more towards teenagers and preteens. The overall feel when flipping through the pages is just pure fun! From bright colors, and patterns on every page, it is easy to understand why 2,020,492 buy it every year.


The table of content is multiple pages in most publications. Partially due multiple images being on the pages. There are also little add-ons of clip art of  stars, hearts, etc. to make the page more fun. The articles are categorized into three sections: Beauty, Body and Health, and Love and life. There are bright colors on the pages such as hot pink and turquoise.


On the covers the reader can find a star that is popular among teens. This can include social media stars as well as singers, and actors. Social media stars are some of the most influential people to young children teens. That is why Seventeen has been able to be so successful, because they appeal to what young people are interested in.  The Font often is not generic, Seventeen editors and graphic designers make the bold move to include cool fonts that are cursive to give the edgy effect. Additionally, the color of the fonts are all different colors. They are usually pastel, neon, or just a really bright color.


The advertisements that fill the magazine are geared specifically to teenagers. With brands like Biore advertising pore clarifying strips, it is clear they know who their guidance is. Ads that deal with personal hygiene are found towards the front of the spread. Towards the back of the issue it is mainly articles. With little ads. This is due to most people only looking through the front half of the magazine. So they want to make their money.


The articles that appear in Seventeen are based on teenagers interests. The best new music recommendations. Relationship and friendship advice. Not to mention multiple stories on cosmetics, hair, and fashion. There are multiple fun quizzes in the back for the reader to take to find out more about themselves!
